The forced labor camp Anita and her brother were at was actual a slave labor camp in the beginning, the construction of the camp began in summer 1940. when the camp was extended the first Jews were deported there. the camp was built on the foundation of two Jewish cemeteries. The new Jewish cemetery of Abraham Street and the old cemetery Jerozolimska Street. From time to time the camp was enlarged, the maximum size was 200 acres. The camp was encircled by an electric double apron barbed wire fence. The inmates worked in workshops. The working day was divided into two 12 hour shifts. The prisoners were undernourished. Because of a lack of the usual striped camp uniforms, yellow stripes were painted on prisoners civilian clothing in order to discourage attempted escapes. There were about 24,000 slaves.
